Judo (kanji: 柔道 jūdō, "The Compliant Way") is a modern Japanese martial art created by Jigoro Kano from various jujutsu styles, sumo wrestling and western wrestling at the end of the 19th century.

The goal in judo is to defeat your opponent by throwing and / or performing a hold, a neck lock or an arm lock. In judo, there are no kicks and punches, unlike other budo disciplines such as karate and jujutsu, except in predetermined forms in a kata. A practitioner of judo is called a judoka.
The sport spread widely after the end of World War II to other countries and is today an Olympic sport organized by the International Judo Federation, which brings together national 195 judo federations.
